It can be intimidating to try to get control over your finances, especially if you’re starting from square one. Here are some tips from USALLIANCE to help you organize your finances and get into a good starting position to chase your financial dreams!

1. For one month, write down every purchase you make – no matter how big or how small! This will show you exactly where all the money you spent for an entire month went.
2. Review your spending habits and your budget. Make sure you’ve got money left over to save up each month and look to decrease your unnecessary spending.
3. Find a budget system that works for you, or even create one all your own! One popular method is the 50/30/20 rule but read up on a few different options before trying one out.
4. Now that you have a good idea of where you spend your money and a system that fits you, it’s time to track your spending and saving. Some people like using an app to track their finances, others prefer manually creating a spreadsheet, and some stick to simple pen and paper! Whatever you choose, it is essential to stay on top of your spending and saving.
5. Stick to your plan for a few months, then review not just your budget but your plan too. Look back to see if you can increase your savings even more, or if you felt a pain point in your plan, don’t be afraid to adjust. The important thing isn’t how you keep your finances organized, just that you do so!
